In recent years, Buenos Aires became the first destination in Latin America and fifth in the world for gay tourism. Its great cultural activity, an attractive tourist proposal, and an open society has helped the city to gain the name of gay friendly.
Buenos Aires was the first city in South America to have a law granting gay and lesbian couples the same rights and benefits than heterosexual couples.
As in other cities, the gay scene is concentrated in the downtown, especially in Recoleta, Palermo, San Telmo and Barrio Norte. There are a lot of gay pubs, bars, restaurants, cinemas, gyms and clubs.
Amerik, located in Gascón 104, is the largest gay disco in Buenos Aires. Go dancing there is a bizarre experience. There are gays, lesbians, transvestites and heterosexuals in search of adventures. The disco has a large darkroom with mazes, and three dance floors: the main with house music, another with Latin music, and the third one with music from the '80s.
Buenos Aires Gay has about 25 bars, mostly located in the Palermo area. The most famous are: Chueca (3283), Bulnes Class (Bulnes 1250) and Titanic Club (Callao 1156).
Buenos Aires Ente Turismos´s web site has a section called "Bue friendly" with briefs and segmented specifically targeting the gay community.
Besides the specifically gay spots, there are many gay-friendly places, tolerant of the gay community, where they can feel integrated and not discriminated by their condition. An offer ranging from hotels to restaurants, clubs or travel agents.
Buenos Aires Gay was named the best global destination for gay tourism, according to a survey by the U.S. magazine Out Traveler, a publication specialized in this market segment.
