MercadoLibre.com is the largest e-commerce site in Latin America . It has platforms in 12 countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Portugal) and has over 1,200 employees. To sum up: Mercado Libre is the Ebay of Latin America.

It all started with Mercado Libre Argentina, which began operations in August 1999. Then the platform was launched in other Latin American countries. Its founder is the Argentinean Marcos Galperin, who is also CEO of the company.

In Mercado Libre millions of users meet to buy and sell their products. You can find everything from toys, clothes and bicycles to the last camera. Products can be new or used items in and buyers may purchase them in an auction format or at a fixed price. Sellers can also post free ads of buildings, vehicles and services in an online classifieds section.

In addition to buying and selling, members share their interests, ask questions, post comments and participate in forums. Mercado Libre has become a huge social network.

Each member has his own reputation that has nothing to do with the size of the company; it is built with the comments of other users.

90% of members of Mercado Libre are individuals or SMEs, but there are also import companies, big brands, retailers and outlets.

Many users began to sell products jut to test Mercado Libre, but when it worked, they devoted exclusively to electronic commerce and Mercado Libre Argentina became their main source of sales. Many companies set up virtual stores.

Mercado Libre also helped consumers that lived far away from the major urban centers and who had been neglected by the traditional distribution network.

MercadoLibre.com has 42.6 million confirmed registered users. In 2009, more than 3 million people and companies sold products through the platform and more than 9 million bought an item.

The platform is one of 50 sites with more Page Views in the world.
