Banco Francés Argentina is the oldest private bank in the country. It was founded on October 14, 1886 under the name Banco Frances del Rio de la Plata. In 1968 Morgan Guaranty Trust acquired 50% of the bank and took over its administration. This strengthened their market penetration. In 1978 Morgan Guaranty Trust sold its shares to South America Inversiones SA and to Alpargatas SA, both Argentines companies.

In the 80s, the bank expanded its branch network throughout the country; this allowed Banco Frances to get more customers. In the beginning of the 80, the customers of the bank were large companies settled in Buenos Aires, but with the branch expansion medium companies were incorporated.

In 1996, Banco Bilbao Vizcaya SA (Now Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, "BBVA") acquired 99.90% of the common shares of Otar S.R.L., which was a major shareholder of Sud América Inversiones S.A., and holder of over 30% of the capital of Banco Francés. Today BBVA has 75.97% of the capital of the Bank, hence de name BBVA.

With the addition of BBVA as its main shareholder, the Bank reaffirmed its universal banking strategia.
