Telefónica of Argentina


The Telefónica Group arrived in Argentina in 1989, at the time of privatization. Telefónica de Argentina is currently with Telecom one of the two largest mobile operators and Internet service providers in the country.

The services offered by Telefónica de Argentina are: mobile telephony, fixed telephony, data transmission, business solutions, access to Internet services, "Contact Centers", insurance broker, and submarine cables. It also provides media content.

15 million Argentines use Movistar, the mobile operator of the company. Movistar (http://www.movistar.com.ar) leads the mobile market in the country, with 33% market share. The company is also the first operator in Latin America to offer built-in 3G modem. Today the 3G5 network of Telefonica de Argentina covers 300 towns in Argentina.

Speedy (http://www.speedy.com.ar), the broadband service of Telefonica de Argentina, has

32 percent of market share. Speedy is also the first provider in Argentina that adapted its service to the demands of Web 2.0. Telefónica also provides narrowband or dial up connection through the brand Advance (www.advance.com.ar).

Terra Networks (www.terra.com.ar) also belongs to the company. It is a portal of information, entertainment and services. It has 4.6 million unique visitors and 173 million page views per month. It is also a leader in creating content for mobile phones.

Telefonica de Argentina also owns part of Telefé, the most important television channel of Argentina. Telefé is known for its entertainment programs and the quality of their products. It also has one of the leading content producers in the region, Telefé Content.

The business group owns other companies such as: Atento, a specialist in call centers, Telefonica International Wholesale Services (TIWS), which manages the wholesale services of the group and Telefónica Ingeniería de Seguridad SA (TIS), a company that provides security services.

The company has invested 16,000 million pesos in 20 years. For 2010, investments will exceed 2,100 million pesos, 30% more than in 2009.
