Chevrolet Argentina


General Motors (GM) is known in Argentina for its Chevrolet brand. In the first decades of the twentieth century, the first assembled cars from New York arrived to Argentina. In January 1925 General Motors, decided to manufacture in Argentina; the company was called “la Chevrolet”. In April of that year Chevrolet Argentina produced its first car. In 1940, the company opened a manufacturing plant in San Martin, province of Buenos Aires, and later the first Argentinean pick up Chevrolet was introduced.

Also the plant produced two versions of the American Chevy II. The first generation was called Chevrolet 400 and the second one, Chevrolet Chevy Coupe. This car became very popular in Argentina. The factory also produced the Opel K-180, which was the domestic version of the Opel Kadett.

GM left the country in 1978 due to economic crisis and returned in 1995. The history of Chevrolet Argentina continued. In 1997 a plant was opened in Rosario, with sophisticated quality standards and installed capacity to produce 90,000 units per year.

Nowadays, the plant produces: the Chevrolet Corsa (First and second generation), the Suzuki Grand Vitara and the Chevrolet Agile, a new product developed by Chevrolet Argentina.

The Chevrolet Corsa Classic was the second best-selling car in the country in 2009. The car costs about 52,760 pesos, but Chevrolet Argentina offers the Chevrolet Plan, which consist of monthly installments of pesos, without interest and with the support of General Motors. On the other hand, the Chevrolet Agile (launched in October 2009) was named the "Car of the Year 2010" by 27 journalists in Brazil. The car sold 1880 units in Brazil and 585 in Argentina, according to data from General Motors. The Chevrolet Agile costs 54 770 pesos.
