According to a recent study by consultancy Prince & Cooke, 92% of Internet users in Argentina have a webmail or a free email account. In this category, hotmail beats Google. 85% of the inhabitants of the country choose Hotmail Argentina. The study was conducted on February 2010 and 651 Internet users of the different provinces of the country were consulted.
Why Argentineans chose Hotmail? In Argentina most Internet users (nine out of ten) use Microsoft Windows Live Messenger to chat. Before, it was impossible to link the gmail account to the Msn. And although nowadays this is possible, the Argentines decided to keep their old Hotmail account.
According to Microsoft, almost 14.4 million argentines use Windows Live Hotmail as an email account. In addition, Windows Live Messenger has 12.5 million users and 432 million messages are sent per day by Messenger. On average, a user of Messenger in Argentina, has more than 150 contacts / friends in his list.
According to another recent study by a private consultancy, most Hotmail users are over 25 years old. The youngest, however, choose the google mail: 50% of Gmail users are under 25 years and 53% are women. On the other hand, Hotmail Argentina is used mostly by men (57%).
Also, Hotmail is the second most visited website in the country, behind Google. The third most visited page is Yahoo.
Hotmail is not only popular in Argentina, there are 369 million active accounts worldwide (according to comScore WW, Nov. 2009). This makes hotmail the world's largest Web mail. In addition it is used in almost every country in the world. Also over 450 million users around the world turn to Windows Live to exchange emails, messages, photos and files within their networks of friends, family and business partners.
Anyway, Gmail has gone from being a secondary option to become the preferred e-mail for many users, especially those who enjoy the additional services offered by Google.
